Gas Fireplace Service in Cerritos, CA

Burner and pilot cleaned and tuned, gas connections leak tested, venting checked and the log set laid back out correctly, which is the part almost everybody gets wrong. Almost the whole city went up between 1965 and 1985, which makes the chimney problems here remarkably consistent.

Gas Fireplace Service for Cerritos Homeowners

Cerritos is the most uniform housing stock we work in, and that makes it easy to predict. This was Dairy Valley until 1967, and what replaced the dairies was two decades of continuous tract building through to the mid-eighties. The consequence for us is that Cerritos is factory-built country. The great majority of these fireplaces are prefabricated metal units venting through a Class A metal chimney inside a framed and stuccoed chase, not full masonry. They fail completely differently. There is no mortar to repoint and no crown to recast; instead there is a galvanised sheet chase cover on top, and after forty years those have almost universally rusted, ponded and started leaking straight down inside the chase where nobody can see it. The water then rots the framing and corrodes the chimney sections. We replace a great many chase covers in stainless here. The other Cerritos issue is age of appliance: a 1978 factory-built firebox has a service life, and refractory panels that have cracked through are not repairable by patching.

1965-1985 tract housing, predominantly factory-built fireboxes in stuccoed chases with rusting galvanised chase covers.

Gas is now the majority of what burns in Los Angeles County fireplaces, and it has quietly become the part of the trade with the least maintenance attention. People believe a gas fireplace is maintenance-free because there is no ash to sweep. In reality gas produces roughly a gallon of water vapour for every hundred thousand BTU, and that moisture condenses inside the flue and rusts dampers, liners and fireboxes from the inside. Then there is the log set itself. Ceramic logs are positioned by the manufacturer to specific coordinates, and a set that has been rearranged by a housekeeper, a previous owner or a well-meaning relative will burn with flame impingement and produce carbon monoxide and soot. We find rearranged log sets constantly. Add pilot assemblies clogged with fifteen years of dust in a dry, dusty basin climate, and thermocouples at the end of their life, and most gas fireplaces here are overdue rather than fine.

Benefits

Why Cerritos Homeowners Choose Us

Carbon monoxide tested, not assumed

A combustion and CO check at the appliance, because a gas fireplace fails quietly and without smoke.

Gas connections leak tested

Every joint and the shut-off valve checked, which is not something to take on faith.

Logs laid back to specification

Ceramic logs returned to the manufacturer positions, so the flame is not impinging and producing soot and CO.

Pilot and thermocouple serviced

The two components that account for most no-light and will-not-stay-lit calls, cleaned and tested.

Burner ports cleared

Dust and spider webbing cleared from the ports and the venturi, restoring an even flame across the burner.

Glass, venting and seals checked

On direct-vent and insert units, the gasket, glass and vent termination checked as a system.

Our Process

Our Cerritos Service Process

1

Shut down and inspect

Gas isolated, the unit opened, and the whole appliance looked at before anything is cleaned.

2

Leak test the gas train

Connections, valve and supply tested for leaks and the results recorded.

3

Clean burner, ports and pilot

Ports cleared, venturi and pilot assembly cleaned, thermocouple or thermopile tested.

4

Check the venting

Flue, damper position or vent termination checked for the appliance type actually fitted.

5

Relay the log set correctly

Logs returned to manufacturer positions and the ember bed relaid so the flame pattern is right.

6

Fire it and measure

Run up to temperature, flame pattern assessed and a CO reading taken before we leave.

FAQ

Cerritos Gas Fireplace Service FAQ

Yes. OakStone Chimney Solutions provides professional gas fireplace service throughout Cerritos, CA and the surrounding Los Angeles County area. Call (323) 990-9906 to schedule.

Yes, and in Cerritos that is most of what we do. A stuccoed chase houses a factory-built metal chimney, and it needs a stainless chase cover, a proper storm collar and cap, and periodic inspection of the firebox refractory. It is different work from masonry but it is the same trade.

Nine times out of ten in Cerritos it is the chase cover. The original galvanised cover has rusted or ponded, water runs down inside the chase, and it shows up on the ceiling before anyone thinks to look at the top of the chimney. A stainless replacement with a proper drip edge and cross break solves it.

Yes, annually, and it is the most commonly skipped service in the trade. There is no ash so nothing looks dirty, but gas puts a great deal of water vapour up the flue which corrodes it, pilot assemblies clog with dust, and thermocouples wear out. Most of our no-heat callouts in December are units that have not been touched in years.
