Why Gas Fireplace Service Matters

People believe a gas fireplace is maintenance-free because there is no ash to sweep. In reality gas produces roughly a gallon of water vapour for every hundred thousand BTU, and that moisture condenses inside the flue and rusts dampers, liners and fireboxes from the inside. Then there is the log set itself. Ceramic logs are positioned by the manufacturer to specific coordinates, and a set that has been rearranged by a housekeeper, a previous owner or a well-meaning relative will burn with flame impingement and produce carbon monoxide and soot. We find rearranged log sets constantly. Add pilot assemblies clogged with fifteen years of dust in a dry, dusty basin climate, and thermocouples at the end of their life, and most gas fireplaces here are overdue rather than fine.

Gas Fireplace Service Questions
Yes, annually, and it is the most commonly skipped service in the trade. There is no ash so nothing looks dirty, but gas puts a great deal of water vapour up the flue which corrodes it, pilot assemblies clog with dust, and thermocouples wear out. Most of our no-heat callouts in December are units that have not been touched in years.
Almost always flame impingement, and almost always because the logs have been moved. Ceramic log sets are positioned to specific manufacturer coordinates. Move one and the flame strikes it, cannot burn cleanly, and produces soot and carbon monoxide. Relaying the set correctly usually fixes it outright.
For a vented gas log set in a normal fireplace, yes, fully open and usually clamped so it cannot be closed. Vent-free and direct-vent appliances are different systems entirely. Which one you have is the first thing we establish, because getting it wrong vents combustion gases into the room.
Usually yes, and it is a popular conversion here. It needs a gas supply run, the correct appliance for the opening, and in most cases a liner, because a flue sized for wood runs too cool for gas and condenses. We quote it as one job rather than in pieces.
