Why gas gets skipped
A wood fireplace tells you when it is unhappy. It smokes, it smells, it drops soot on the hearth. A gas fireplace does none of that. It lights, it looks correct, and it goes on looking correct while the flue above it quietly corrodes.
That is the whole problem in a sentence. Gas appliances need annual attention for entirely different reasons than wood ones, and because those reasons are invisible, the service gets deferred indefinitely.
Soot on the glass or the logs
This is the symptom we are called about most, and the cause is almost always the same: somebody moved the logs.
Ceramic log sets are not decorative arrangements. The manufacturer positions each log to specific coordinates so the flame burns in clear air between them. Move one, and the flame strikes the ceramic instead of burning freely. That is flame impingement, and an impinged flame cannot complete combustion, so it deposits soot and produces carbon monoxide.
Logs get moved by cleaners, by previous owners, by anyone who took them out to vacuum and put them back by eye. Relaying the set to specification usually clears the sooting outright, with no parts involved.
A yellow or lazy flame
Some yellow in the flame tips is normal and intentional on a decorative log set. What is not normal is a flame that is yellow throughout, moves sluggishly, or looks uneven across the burner.
That generally points to blocked burner ports or a restricted venturi, and in this climate the culprit is usually dust and spider webbing accumulated over years in a dry basin. Clearing the ports restores an even flame across the whole burner.
A pilot that will not light or will not stay lit
The single most common winter callout, and usually one of two components. A pilot assembly clogged with dust will not light cleanly. A thermocouple or thermopile at the end of its life will light but not hold, because it is no longer generating enough millivolts to keep the gas valve open.
Neither is expensive. Both are the sort of thing that fails on the first genuinely cold evening of the year, which is precisely when everybody else is calling too.
The symptoms that mean stop now
Most of the above can wait for a scheduled appointment. These cannot:
- Any smell of gas near the fireplace
- Black staining appearing on the wall or mantel above the opening
- A carbon monoxide alarm sounding when the fireplace is running
- Headaches, nausea or drowsiness that improve when you leave the room
- Visible rust on the burner, the firebox or the damper

What an annual service actually covers
The gas train gets leak tested at every connection and at the shut-off valve. Burner ports, venturi and pilot assembly are cleaned, and the thermocouple or thermopile is tested rather than assumed good. The venting is checked for the appliance type actually fitted, which matters because vented, vent-free and direct-vent units have completely different requirements.
Then the log set goes back to manufacturer positions, the ember bed is relaid, and the unit is run up to temperature so the flame pattern can be assessed hot. A carbon monoxide reading is taken before we leave. Not inferred from the flame colour, measured.

For a vented gas log set in a conventional fireplace, fully open, and it should be clamped so it cannot be closed by accident. Vent-free and direct-vent appliances are different systems with different rules. Establishing which one you actually have is the first thing any technician should do, because getting it wrong vents combustion gases into the room.
Annually, the same as wood, and the reasons are simply less visible. Water vapour corroding the flue, dust in the pilot assembly and drifting log positions all accumulate whether or not the appliance looks fine.
Photograph the set first, from the front and from above, then put every log back exactly where it was. If you are at all unsure afterwards, have it checked. A log an inch out of position is not a cosmetic issue, it is a combustion issue.
Usually yes, and it is a common conversion here. It needs a gas supply run, the correct appliance for the opening, and in most cases a liner, because a flue sized for wood runs too cool for gas and condenses. It is worth quoting as one job rather than in pieces.
