Norwalk went from farmland to a city of tens of thousands inside a single decade. The tracts that went up through the 1950s were built quickly and to a price, and the chimneys reflect that: light masonry stacks on shallow footings, tile-lined, with minimal crown detail and no cap as standard. Seventy years on, the most common thing we find on a camera survey here is displaced flue tile. Some of that is seismic, but a good deal of it is simple differential settlement on ground that was agricultural before it was residential and was not always prepared as thoroughly as it would be today. A chimney is a heavy, rigid column attached to a light flexible house, so when the ground under one corner moves, the stack is where you see it. Look for a gap opening between the chimney and the wall of the house, or a stair-step crack in the mortar joints. Neither is necessarily an emergency, but both mean the flue inside has almost certainly moved too.

A liner is what stands between the fire and the timber framing of your house, and a large number of chimneys in this county do not have a working one. Anything built here before about 1930 — much of Old Torrance, Uptown Whittier, the Long Beach bungalow neighbourhoods — was commonly built with no liner at all, just brick against brick. Later houses got terracotta tile, which is sound until the ground moves, and the ground here moves. Cracked and displaced tiles are the single most common serious defect we find on camera. The other driver is appliance change. Every gas conversion, every wood stove and every fireplace insert changes the volume and the temperature of what the flue has to carry, and an original masonry flue is nearly always far too large for a modern appliance. An oversized flue runs cool, which condenses acidic moisture inside the chimney and destroys it from within faster than any fire would.
